At the tip of Africa lies the largest particle accelerator facility in the Southern Hemisphere and the only cyclotron facility of its kind on the African continent. iThemba Laboratories for Accelerator-Based Science (LABS), a research facility of the National Research Foundation (NRF), operates from sites located in Cape Town and Johannesburg offering applied and fundamental research capacity and infrastructure for accelerator-based sciences. iThemba LABS uses the k=200 Separated Sector Cyclotron (SSC) for radioisotope production and research, and an 11 MeV cyclotron for producing 18F.

iThemba LABS has produced radioisotopes for clinical and research applications for the local and international markets for over thirty years. In June 2023, the NRF-iThemba LABS launched the South African Isotope Facility (SAIF) which will re-position isotope production capabilities with the acquisition of a 70 MeV cyclotron. Future prospects include the production of theranostics and targeted alpha-particle-emitting radioisotopes such as 211At and 225Ac.

Dr Ria Bester is a Nuclear Physician based in Bellville and is dedicated to the practice of Nuclear Medicine and its benefits to all patients. 
Dr Ria Bester completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Stellenbosch and Tygerberg Hospital in 1984.  Thereafter, she worked in Paediatrics for 2 years, starting in Nuclear Medicine, Tygerberg Hospital in 1987.  During the next years she completed her M Sc (Nucl. Med.) followed by the M Med in Nuclear Medicine in 1999.  

In 2000, she started a private practice at Mediclinic Louis Leipoldt in Bellville, Cape Town and opened a 2nd practice at Netcare N1 City Oncology and Neuro-Interventional Centre in Goodwood, Cape Town in 2008.
Dr Bester has a dedicated team (from technologists, the receptionist and cleaning staff), striving to maintain a high standard of patient management and care. Our patients should feel at ease and should be able to ask questions about imaging procedures and time needed to complete a study. 

We are striving to improve healthcare and see Nuclear Medicine progress as one of accessible imaging to every person in South Africa.  It is important to keep up with new developments in our field and assist patients to get to necessary centres for specialised Theranostics.
